Maleek Berry
Maleek Shoyebi (born August 11, 2020), better known as Maleek Berry, is a British-born Nigerian music producer and recording artist. He was signed under Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment in 2013 and worked with Starboy as an in house producer. After his break into the spotlight in 2012, Maleek Berry was nominated in the “Music Producer of the Year” category at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Also In 2017 he was nominated in the Best Male category of the annual MOBO Awards.
Berry started off his career in the church, forming a group with two close friends. Managing to get his hands on a little pre-production setup. The group began writing, producing and performing their own songs at the ages of 14 and 15, only to disband at 16. Berry then spent the later years working on his craft in between formal education – attaining a Bachelors degree in Computer Science and learning to play the piano, which played a major part in the maturity of his sound.
October 2015 marked a major shift in Maleek Berry’s career as he took center stage this time with his first official solo release as an Artist entitled “For My People” featuring UK Rap artist Sneakbo. With positive reviews an official video was released in January 2016 and the video “For My People” reached 100k views online in fewer than 4 weeks, giving Maleek Berry a massive introduction into his solo career.
Following his success in 2016 he released the self-produced smash hit “Kontrol” which became viral on the internet gathering millions of streams online across different platforms. The official video was released on his birthday in August and it got a million views on YouTube in just over a month. Berry went on to release his debut EP, “Last Daze of Summer”, through his Berry’s Room label in 2016 and another single “4 Me”. Though the vast majority of Berry’s works has been squarely Afro-pop, some of it also borrows from trap sounds.
