Who do you make music for?
I make music for p
Who is Davina Oriakhi?
Davina Oriakhi is Davina Oriakhi.
Being a creative person, If you had to stop making music, what
Definitely Poetry. One of my favourite things about music is songwriting. I feel like words are so powerful when written and orchestrated in such a way that it taps into the listener’s soul beyond performance. with poetry, there is no distraction from the words, Poems are like naked songs. Bared in all its beauty and vulnerability and power.
Dance is another medium I would use to channel my creativity. Dance to me is the realisation that your body exists for the expression of your soul, and tapping into that power. it is magical. I already use these medium(s).
Yeah, I watched you go at it in the visual for “Hosea 4v6“.
Haha. I’m gonna do more. I used to dance properly from 2010 – 2015. Trying to get back into that. Love dance so much.
Do you think women are still underrepresented in the music industry?
Yes, women are still underrepresented in the music industry (speaking to the Nigerian Industry). There has been an
“Unlearning needs to be done in the minds of the influencer’s and Consumers”. What do you mean by this?
Everyone has a part to play in the improvement of the situation… that’s what I mean… It’s not just down to the gatekeepers or the fans.
Are you a part of the “Alte” movement?
No, I am not. Musically and socially. I am not.
Some say it’s another way of boxing creatives in… What do you think?
I appreciate that a lot of people box creatives for the sake of understanding and not necessarily for malicious or suppressive motives. But yes I agree, I enjoy my musical freedom… I wouldn’t want to be boxed by something I’m not even a part of.
Where do you stand on the issue of feminism? Do you consider yourself to be one?
Feminism is simple. The social-political and economic equality of the sexes. It’s honestly a very simple movement that has been unnecessarily overcomplicated in my opinion.
Do I consider myself a feminist? yes. Do I understand why people may be put off by that? Yes.
Personally, I think it’s because some women take it too far. And then you have the female supremacist hiding under the umbrella of feminism. Having said this, I agree that feminism is a just and necessary movement. Everyone in respective of their genders should be allowed a voice, a place and the power to decide and shape their future.
Female supremacist, exactly. Hence why I always stress the word Equality.
How would you describe your relationship with Preye Itams?
Preye and I are good friends and we work with each other musically.
How did you both meet?
Oh um… She was a contestant at a talent show in University. I was a judge. I heard her sing and I was like “she’s a star and she doesn’t even realise it “. We stayed in touch, started talking and we became close… Honestly, she’s a bundle of joy. One of the loveliest people I’ve ever met.
Are you well acquainted with WavyTheCreator?
I’ve met Wavy once. I think she’s so cool.
Are you guys gonna put out music together in the near future or you already got one?
No, Not at the moment. I’d love to have a song with Wavy. As I said, I think she’s super cool.
Social Media, is it more of a blessing or a distraction to our generation?
Social media hmm… Its a blessing and a curse, distraction is an understatement in my opinion.
How do you find a balance between “social media” and your “real s
I just keep in mind that social media isn’t real life. Social media is a tool, not a home. And when I start to feel too comfortable and I find myself in self-comparison or taking what people say too seriously I go on a social media fast. I can stay off for 3 days to two months depending on how long I need to do it. The average is a week.
What’s the most valuable advice you would give an emerging artiste?
Do not overlook development as an artist. It is important to truly hone your craft to develop your skills and your artistry. Never be comfortable with your level of ability, always seek to get better.
Surround yourself with honest loving positive people, do not be afraid to protect your space by blocking negativity out even if they come in the form of a friend or family member. If you’re like me and you get that bad energy from close family, you need to make sure you have a circle of friends who are also creatives, this tends to make the pressure more bearable.
Remember this, The only type of failure in pursuing your passion and walking in your purpose is quitting. When you quit you fail, but as long as you keep going, (keep pushing keep trying to keep working hard, keep learning, keep networking) you are winning, you are a success.
Wow! very true. No creative should get too comfortable in their space. They need to grow and evolve in order to keep creating.
New age artiste seem to have less regard for rules, and are doing away quick with old standards. I watched “Trap music“ become a thing. So it’s kinda like there are no standards for art and expression. Which begs this question; What’s your definition of good music?
My definition of good music is music that connects to the heart and stands the test of time. The latter is very important. This is what differentiates a one-hit trend from a classic.
What’s the most valuable advice you would give girls in your generation?
My advice to young girls is to be patient with themselves on the journey to self-acceptance and discovery. It may seem very cliché but honestly, it is the foundation of self-esteem, confidence, faith, courage, and boldness. Whether it be in their relationship or their business. It’s key.
Your favourite superhero of all time and why?
My favourite superhero… Well, she’s a superhero to me… Esmeralda of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. She stood for justice and she wasn’t afraid to point out the hypocrisy in the ruling power. And she can dance her toes off. Lol… I wanna play her character on Broadway someday.
If you had a time travel machine/ device, what time will you visit and why?
If I had a time travel device… Yo… Some many points in history are of interest and sheer fascination. I would go to AD 325… The council of Nicaea put together by Emperor Constantine. I feel like that was the birth of the religion and institution of Christianity. So much was and is still hidden from us. I want to go back to that time to witness the events that took place and know what they actually said.
Also, like to visit 1964 to know how Sam Cooke really died. I want to know what really went down.
You don’t agree that Bertha Franklin shot him? Do y
I definitely think there is more to the story. And I’m just very curious to know. I’d also love to be in all the sessions with Quincy Jones when he was producing Off the Wall Album and Thriller album for Michael Jackson.
I’d also love to go 50 years into the future to see the state of agriculture in the entire world at large. It’s such a shame that the planet is being exploited at the present.
Your favourite song from your discography?
After April 19 2019, it will be “Bang the Drum” with Preyé… But right now … I would say “Lagos” because it’s my favourite song to perform.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
From the top of my head. To never feel too old or too young to learn anything.
Are you in a relationship at the moment?
I’m single. Totally fine with that. But I do go on dates once in a while.
Thank you for doing this with me.
The pleasure has been mine.
